Ascension is not one specific religious path, but an amalgam of the mystic traditions around the world. Most would consider it a subset of the overall New Age movement, with some of its own specific theology and terminology. Rooted in the modern spiritualist movement and the inspired works of Theosophy and its offshoots, including the works of H.P. Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, and Guy Ballard, ascension lore has incorporated aspects of Hinduism, Buddhism, Gnostic Christianity, Qabalah, Taoism, alchemy, ceremonial magic, Paganism, and shamanism into a synthesis that is dependent upon the practitioner. No one consistent doctrine or set of core beliefs defines all the participants in the movement, other than the belief that humanity is "ascending" to another level consciousness or higher vibrational level. Many believe in a variety of beings, including angels, spirits guides, deities, faeries, enlightened aliens, and ascended masters, in which are aiding our evolution to the next level. These ascended masters, enlightened beings from every culture and time period, are the model for our own ascension process. Ascensionists sometimes refer to themselves as "Light Workers." The focus is on world peace, healing, unconditional love, and the belief that we all come from the same source and will return to it. Complementary practices, including healing arts such as crystal healing and Reiki, as well as channeling, psychic development, and holistic health, are a part of the overall paradigm.
