The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft
By Denise Zimmermann and Katherine Gleason

Words of attention concerning this book, though the book gives the basics, some of the information is not exact to the popular (i.e. traditionally) teachings, such as the diagram pictures for the elemental Pentagram/Pentacle---the diagram gives the element points in reverse to popular teachings.

Witch, Warlock, and Magician

This is a fascinating treatise on the existence of witches and warlocks.  Adams was keeping tabs on them for the general populace as well as feeding some of the frenzy by going into detail on the witch trials. Interesting from a historical standpoint but not from a standpoint of actual practice of witchcraft, though I still highly recommend the reading.

Enochian Magic

Enochian Magic is based on the writings of Dr. John Dee  and Edward Kelley. It is a system of angelic ceremonial magic based on the evocation and commanding of spirits. It consist of various symbols in a new alphabet and grids spelling out the names of various Enochian angels. The system was adopted by the Golden Dawn and integrated into its material through the writings and instructions of Samuel MacGregor Mathers, Israel Regardie and Aleister Crowley.

Geotic Magic

The word Goetic refers to a particular genre of magic. All too often in today's occult realm, "Goetia" means only the one little grimoire included in the Lemegeton, the Lesser key of Solomon. However, "Goetia" comes from the Greek word meaning, 'howling, moaning or lamenting'. It is the form of magic used by the Goets, the magicians that conjured the spirits and it refers to the sounds they made during the conjuration process.
This style of magic has roots that go back beyond the dimly recalled times of neo-platonic philosophy. It was performed by the average magician long before the celestial hierarchies were instituted, and resembles shamanism a great deal more than it resembles Golden Dawn style ceremonial magic.

Rooted in the terrestrial systems of magic, this system put the magician in touch with the spirits of nature, the spirits of the terrestrial sphere. This sphere included what ceremonial magicians now refer to as "elemental" spirits, but also the spirits of the departed, spirits of the local trees and rivers and the general Genius Loci, spirits that were assigned ruler-ship over the local lands. In ancient times, it was understood that all people who died became spirits that could protect the living, if the living in question knew the secret words. The term Goetia refers to the methods of working with these spirits, whether they were spirits of the dead or spirits of nature.

Chaos Magic

Unlike most other magical practices chaos magic is not a spiritual path. Using the maxim 'Nothing is true, everything is permitted", chaos magicians emphasize pragmatic techniques and observable results in the world as it is directly experienced as a form of sorcery.  Its aim is to achieve states of consciousness or 'gnosis'. Chaos magic has acquired a certain notoriety  for being sinister and even Satanic. This maybe because it rejects spiritual elements in its practices.

Chaos magic may be summed up as, avoidance of any form of dogmatism, focus on personal experience, the deconditioning  of the self by modifying and discarding beliefs and "ego-fiction." It is an eclectic and diverse approach, choosing from themes as wide apart as science fiction or tantrism, or adopting the beliefs of a spiritual system if they are thought to serve a useful function. The overall aim is to achieve gnosis as a form of inner knowledge.

Ascension

(Book and material links at the bottom of the page)

Ascension is not one specific religious path, but an amalgam of the mystic traditions around the world. Most  would consider it a subset of the overall New Age movement, with some of its own specific theology and terminology. Rooted in the modern spiritualist movement and the inspired works of Theosophy and its offshoots, including the works of H.P. Blavatsky, Alice Bailey, and Guy Ballard, ascension lore has incorporated aspects of Hinduism, Buddhism, Gnostic Christianity, Qabalah, Taoism, alchemy, ceremonial magic, Paganism, and shamanism into a synthesis that is dependent upon the practitioner. No one consistent doctrine or set of core beliefs defines all the participants in the movement, other than the belief that humanity is "ascending" to another level consciousness or higher vibrational level. Many believe in a variety of beings, including angels, spirits guides, deities, faeries, enlightened aliens, and ascended masters, in which are aiding our evolution to the next level. These ascended masters, enlightened beings from every culture and time period, are the model for our own ascension process. Ascensionists sometimes refer to themselves as "Light Workers." The focus is on world peace, healing, unconditional love, and the belief that we all come from the same source and will return to it. Complementary practices, including healing arts such as crystal healing and Reiki, as well as channeling, psychic development, and holistic health, are a part of the overall paradigm.

Alchemy

(Books and Material Links at the bottom of page)

Alchemy is a tradition that focuses on the act of transmutation. Though it eventually transformed into modern day chemistry, losing its spiritual value except with the most isolated of seekers, alchemy is a worldwide tradition with roots in Egypt, Greece, Asia, and the Middle East. The classic text, the Emerald Tablet,  also known as the Smaragdine Table, or Tabula Smaragdina, is ascribed to the Greek figure Hermes Trismegistus, known to the Egyptians as the god Thoth. Hermetic manuscripts attributed to Hermes or his followers continue to influence alchemy and Western magic.

Alchemy is an amalgam of many different cultures and traditions, mixing Qabalah, Hermeticism, Astrology and Christian symbolism. Most people misunderstood the teachings of Alchemy, assuming it was about greed with its popular image of transforming lead into gold. Such alchemists seeking only fortune were labeled as 'puffers' by those who sought the spiritual value of alchemy.

The spiritual alchemists sought to change their darkness, or what might be known as karma, their personal lead, into refined spiritual energy and enlightenment (gold). This transmutation was often called, the Philosopher's Stone or the Perfected Stone.

Spiritual Initiation ~ The Private Initiation ~

The journey to enlightenment is one govern by initiation or awakening.

I prefer to call this "Private" rather than "Self Initiation."  It is the least (first) and the greatest (last) initiation into all levels, of all occult endeavors, it is being "a Master and a Novice" at the same time. And your crown and belt is "Wisdom and Understanding."

This is a ritual of initiation that no other manifested being will attend and participate in with you, it is not just a coming to a crossroad or impasse in your path and journey through the physical realm, where you have decisions and choices to make concerning the directions to take in your path. We all encounter crossroads, which school or college to attend, which job or career, which religion and faith to follow, to stay married or not, down to the simple mundane of seeking directions in rather to speak up in a situation or to remain silent.  Your Spiritual Initiation is more to that of having reached the summit, a gate and threshold, that has narrowed your options into one direction, straight ahead over the threshold, no left and right directions and to turn back would be total annihilation (of the current you) and useless for you.The personal paradigm shift, where the lines to "labels and definitions" blur, no longer giving you navigational reasoning and logic.

Carl Yung said, "Man is never helped in his suffering by what he thinks for himself, but only by revelations of wisdom greater than his own. It is wisdom, which lifts him out of his distress. Hence we find that after years of therapy, some people's quest for deeper meaning is still not quenched. They then become spiritual seekers, drinking from the fountain of their inner perennial wisdom."

To step over the threshold and into the private, self, spiritual initiation is not meant that you leave everything you have gathered on your journey, up to that point, behind. Your past learning, history and experiences were for a reason, the gathering of all these will now be transformed (and sometimes, mutated) to help give you back your navigational bearings and guide you on to your next travel and phase. Connecting with Spirit is man's highest achievements, our higher consciousness alchemically affects our whole being and our world. It is being initiated into the realm of Spirit (Higher Self, the immortal realm) rather than into the realm of  physically manifested peer groupings of ranks, your true teacher/s are not in this physical realm, but will use the physical to help further you along.

Spiritual adept Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov said, "You will never improve nor transform yourself by accumulating knowledge in your head. To be sure, this knowledge can broaden your mind and point of view, but that is only on the surface, you will always be the same underneath, remarkable as far as general knowledge is concerned, a veritable one-man information bureau. But as far as character, virtues and qualities are concerned, nothing will be changed. Whereas knowledge of your spirit, the divine science, obliges you to penetrate to the depths and climb to the heights, and it is not possible to be unchanged by it. It is through inner knowledge that we grow and mature."

Your solitary practice and private initiation is the foundation and corner stone for all other practice, craft and arts you may be guided to enter in to. The inner temple will remain long after the outer temple waste away, our true connection to others is in the spirit realm.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in his well known essay on history, "There is one mind common to all individual men. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of the same. He that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a freeman of the whole estate. What Plato thought, he may think; what the saint felt, he may feel; what at any time has befallen any man, he can understand. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent. It is Spirit and not the fact that is identical. By descending far down into the depths of the soul, and not primarily by painful acquisitions of many skills, the artist attains the power of awakening other souls to a given activity."

The Sacredness of "Salt" ~ Part Three ~ Folklore, Mythology and Magick

[1]Magickally, salt is used as an element of protection. It is also use as a cleansing tool and conductor of energy. But is salt truly an element? Scientifically speaking, salt is a compound sodium chloride, but for our purposes we refer to it as an essential element of our magickal practice.
In show business, it is said one is a triple threat if one can sing, act, and dance. Salt is a triple threat of the magicakal world, crossing over all three areas of culinary, medicinal, and magicakal realms.

From the Roman Catholic rite of preparing holy water to the native Indian customs of using salt to draw away harmful spirits, many belief systems, world over, have used salt both as a purifier and to repel evil. In some traditions and practices, it is used on the altar to represent the element of earth and in other practices it is thought to represent the water element because of its origins in the sea.

Looking into the mythology of salt, from Finland, we learn that Ukko, the mighty god of the sky, struck fire in the heavens, a spark from which descending was received by the waves and became salt.  The Chinese honor an idol, Phelo, a mythological personage whom they believe to have been the one to discover salt and the originator of its use. From the Mexican Nahuas we have the Goddess of salt, Huixtocihuatl, whose brothers the rain gods are said to have driven her into the sea after a quarrel. She is said to have invented the art of making salt.

Here are a few resources to help further the study (and practice) of "Salt" and the sacred uses of it.
